I Have the same question. how do I change the NAS from RAID 5 + spare to a RAID 6 configuration without loosing data? It is unclear to me which steps must be taken in order to prevent any data loss. The help file is no help in this case.
Best regards

In DSM 2.3 - we currently support converting from 3 drive RAID-5 to 4-drive RAID-6.
You need a minimum of a 4-bay system to support RAID-6.
To convert to RAID-6 is the same as to convert RAID-1 to RAID-5; in the volume manager, you will need to click on the Change Disk Type- and proceed with the rest of the wizard.
Hope this helps.

To refer to my question ... do you support conversion from RAID 5 + spare to RAID 6?

We currently do not support converting RAID-5+Spare to RAID-6.

What about a 5 drive RAID-5 to 10-drive RAID-6? Is this supported?

hmmm...it looks like you have to "start again" to take advantage on the new volume formats.....simple really, just BUY ANOTHER synology box!

well im in the fortunate position of being able to buy another box. I've gone for a Drobo S now - so much simpler when managing the volume sizes - I just replace the smaller drive with a bigger one and it all works itself out. Got 2 2TB drive in it a the moment and im on the process of migrating the data off of my synology CS407. When this is complete (it takes an age over the network) Ill move the drives into the Drobo and leave one small drive in the Syno jsut for streaming movies and music - all of my data shall be on the Drobo from now on.
