Readme for WD Green Drive Slowness Room

This room was created for the discussion about the ongoing Western Digital 1.5TB and 1.0 Terabyte models, which are Green Caviar drives. Specifically, the models affected are

WD10EADS-00P8B0

Using the above drive in any computer system, including the Synology DiskStation will eventually result in low performance of the hard drive during reading and writing. The last six characters within the Western Digital Model indicate a revision to the product family. The original revision which was tested by Synology and sold by Western Digital for some time is

WD10EADS-00L5B1

...which our engineering team did find compatible. You may elect to contact your retailer or reseller to purchase these drives.

Using information from third party sites, other users have experienced the same error in terms of lack of performance with Windows, Linux, Tivo, Win MCE. For now, it's suggested to avoid using the "00P8B0" variant of drives by Western Digital, and consider purchasing the "WD15EADS-00R6B0" or "WD10EADS-00L5B1", or one of these alternatives from another brand.
