telnet and ftp questions....

Postby cpnichols7 » Sun Apr 04, 2010 12:25 am

Hello:

I have just gotten a new ds409slim. Finally got it all set up. I have an old cheap buffalo linkstation with stuff on it. It is also on my network. I basically want to dump all the stuff off the linkstation on to the ds409slim in a efficient way. I can link to both on my computer but I figured it would be easier if I try to get files transferred directly from one to the other.

I can FTP to either on of them, and I can telnet to the ds409slim. So I figured I would telnet to the ds409slim and try and ftp into my linkstation. But as it turns out once I telnet, I can ftp. What is the best way to get the ds409slim to ftp directly to the linkstation... any other suggestions would be good.

The main issue I have is that both the linkstation and the ds409slim are on gigabit networks, and my laptop is wireless, using my laptop to copy from one to the other is really slow.

Thanks

Hi,

You probably used the slow route now but the linux command wget supports ftp. You could telnet into the DS and use the wget command to "pull files" from the buffalo, see ftp examples at http://linux.about.com/od/commands/l/blcmdl1_wget.htm

Thanks for the hint... it has been a while since I command line ftped... Either way, I discovered that the big issue is that the buffalo is slow, the router was doing the proper thing and routing the traffic from one device directly to the other.
