Synology Disk Station DS1010+ Running Windows?

Postby jwaiv » Sat Apr 17, 2010 5:16 pm

Hello,

I'm considering getting a Synology Disk Station DS1010+, does anyone know if its possible to install Windows Server onto the device? If possible are there any driver issues?

Thanks!

Yes you can .. I have successfully installed the Beta version of Windows Home Server (Vail).
You must change the BIOS settings to boot via USB.

fllau,

Would you please give a short description of how you changed BIOS settings
on the DS1010+?

Thank you
Doug

To install another operating system to your 1010+ you need to boot the setup from an USB Stick and that is possible by connecting a VGA Display, usb keyboard and usb mouse, press the key for accessing the BIOS when booting (like for a standard pc) and choose to boot from LE: USB (windows). http://www.ntm1275.f2s.com/synology/syn ... leport.htm

I would like to know if you install Windows Server or any other OS (Ubuntu etc) how can you revert back to a clean install of Synology DSM?

Yes that's a good question. Is this reversible?

Yes it is possible.
I installed Windows Home Server on some test harddrives and got it to work. When I mounted the old disk with Synology OS, the DS1010 then booted it up in the Synology OS.

My experience with Windows OS:
-The blue LED flash all the time.
-There is no control of the fans. Full speed all the time. (I've installed other fans to fix the problem).

Has anyone tried to mount a Broadcom Crystal HD decoder (BCM970012) in the PCIe Mini Card slot?

I'm considering to upgrade to a DS1812+. Does anyone know if the same thing is possible with that model?

I suppose there's no official support on this, right?

I understand that one must "boot" windows from the USB stick, but what about after that? Do you actually RUN windows from the USB stick, or do you physically install the Windows OS onto the Synology Diskstation, and if so, how would you do that - for instance if the synology is configured for SHR, or RAID mode?

Hi everyone,

I must confess I have the exact same questions as cybermind75. Does anyone have any clue about those?

It looks like Synology is making strides toward the ability to run windows, although its currently done via Virtual environments using ESXi and vSphere. Therefore I believe the idea(correct me if I'm wrong) is to use Synology for the Virtual Machine's data stored on an iSCSI disk. I have the DS710+ and apparently, I'd have to upgrade to a DS712+ or DS713+ to have that functionality. And while I enjoy the idea of using Synology for Virtual Disk storage for Virtual Machines,.... You still need a client machine running vSphere to make it all work. The idea is to run a completely "headless" machine that will run Synology and Windows simultaneously - without the need for a client machine using electricity unnecessarily.

Good day,

I am currently in a process investigating Windows installation on a DS 710+. You will have to install Windows onto the HDD to properly boot.

Unfortunately I damaged the internal Flash data of the DS during this and need to recover it. (Synology Atom processor DS do have a BIOS and a rewritable flash chip which both are needed to boot up).

I would be interested hearing from those who did a Windows installation
a) how their installation process was.
b) how they handled problems as above.

Thanks and brgds
