ssh ports and auth keys

Postby rizzy » Thu May 10, 2012 10:14 am

Hello,
Purchased DS 110j yesterday, so far - impressive bit of kit, very happy i went with Synology.
While setting up i couldn't find options to change the default SSH port and option to use paired auth keys. I used SSH since early Redhat days and over the years come to conclusion that SSH on default port and password protection is asking for trouble.
Are there any guides/howto's on setting up SSH using custom ports and keys?
Any other vulnerabilities i should investigate before taking DiskStation online?
Many Thanks
rizzy

Hi and congrats on your purchase, it really is a very nice NAS and they often update the software/DSM 8)

I was looking for the same info, since after upgrading DSM the configuration for SSH is lost :(

Changing the SSH port can be done in the file
Code: Select all
/etc/ssh/sshd_config

Then search the line that says
Code: Select all
#Port 22

And change it to your own port number, don't forget to remove the #. For example:
Code: Select all
Port 99999

Make sure the port number is not in use, see the source article for more info.

Also check out this url for some of the basic commands, such as restarting SSH after applying the config-changes :)

Btw, I also needed to enable SSH again via the web interface after upgrading. Go to Control panel -> Terminal -> Enable SSH
