DS212j IP config question

Postby ph2003 » Fri May 04, 2012 10:29 pm

Hi there,

I've just rebuilt my NAS from scratch. In DSM 3.2 I restored factory defaults (after taking a data backup).

I've rebuilt with DSM 4.0-2219 (current version) and during setup I selected to use a manual ip address. I entered 192.168.1.253 as the static ip which is the same as the DSM 3.2 built. The DS would not allow this and stated that 'This IP address has already in use'. I could really do with using this IP as all other device on my LAN point to this IP for NAS access.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers
Paul.

Well, during installation just use DHCP or assign a different static IP address.
When it's done, from DSM change to your preferred IP. If it doesn't allow that, disconnect it, and ping from any PC that address to check if accidentally any other device is using it.
There is no other reason why DSM wouldn't allow you to use a certain IP.

It is not really the DSM that doesnt allow you to use this IP, but the DHCP server (router). You should check there and "free" this reserved IP (or at least you should see there which device is using this IP as suggested by maxxfi).

The dhcp pool on the router is set from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.244 leaving the last 10 addresses free for static ip's.

I can only think the DS has some ability to remember what was set as the ip address even after format or the synology assistant is retaining the ip info.

Can anyone confirm the above? When you do a 'factory reset' (format) on a DS are any settings retained? Or is it possible that the assistant software is some how holding that into and preventing me from changing the ip?

Nope. I have a 210j on which I run some tests and reinstall DSM frequently, and after I configure a static IP, next time I reformat it the Assistant tries again to propose a dynamic IP settings. Even after re-selecting static IP, it has no memory whatsoever of the old IP used.

When you select a specific IP, Synology Assistant is actually pinging that IP address (from the PC you are running SA). If it receives an answer, it means that some device is actively using that IP.

Please *do* test settings, don't just work by assumptions (like "IP a.b.c.d should be free").

Thanks for all your replies!

Since the format I have received a new router from my isp. After closer inspection it appear the isp have added a dhcp pool to the new router which uses my NAS ip.

I'm not sure if I should edit this pool or just put the NAS on a different static up?

If you have other devices using static addresses, it's probably easier to edit the DHCP pool. Otherwise, just adapt to the new router and find which range is reserved for the static addresses.
