IP Port consolidation for webservices

Postby Amokka » Thu May 03, 2012 11:35 am

I frequently need to access my DS from various remote sites with limited internet access.

Therefore, I would like to limit the number of ports used by the various webservices to normal HTTP (TCP:80) + HTTPS (TCP:443).

Currently, the following ports in use are:
TCP:
80 = Web Station, Photo Station, Web Mail
443 = Web Station, Photo Station, Web Mail
5000 = Management UI, File Station, Audio Station, +
5001 = Management UI, File Station, Audio Station, +
5006 = WebDAV
6690 = CloudStation
7001 = FileStation
9002 = Squeezebox
... and I haven't even mentioned the non-Synology apps...

Obviously, other services uses additional ports such as TCP:25(SMTP), TCP/UDP:6881(BT), TCP:21,55537-55664(FTP) and so on, but these don't give me any trouble as these services are normally used for such services.

I would like to limit everything to the ordinary HTTPS port and use subfolders instead. Something like:
/Management/ = Management UI
/Photo/ = Photo Station
/WebDAV/ = WebDAV
...

But HOW do I accomplish this :?:
Does anyone have any suggestions :?:

:twisted: Being a windows-man, (I'm gonna get SO flamed for saying this) I could obviously put a Microsoft TMG (it's a Microsoft Proxying Firewall for use in companies) up in front of my internet connection and have it make the necessary changes and also offload the SSL encryption.
But - somehow - setting up a TMG seems to me to be a bit... excessive? wrong? ridiculous? :lol:

So - please: Does anyone know of any other solution :?:
(And as I said: I'm a windows-man: You need to spell it out and provide detailed instructions :) )

...Well...

Now that you mention it, I do recall to have considered the options in the "Application Portal"... It's just not what I need.

I did some more reading in this forum - and I am quite annoyed by - and disappointed in Synology.
It seems that not only has Synology made a special effort to make sure that the admin website is not shared with "ordinary" websites - they have also effectively prevented anyone from reassigning the ports and move the DSM ports to something more ordinary.
It does not even make a difference if you disable Web Station and/or uncheck https...

So it seems that it is only possible to consolidate a few services to "normal" ports by combining router port forwarding and maybe the application portal.

I hate to say this: Synology, this is simply not good enough.

Here here! Coming from Qnap I'm not that impressed with this particular aspect.
Not allowing us to select what we want to apply port 80 and 443 to is quite annoying.
I'm going to have to go back to memorizing port numbers for external access now.

I liked being able to go to my DDNS address and select what I want to log into with my Qnap.
DS412+ used for Media download, storage and TM backup.
