Cannot map networkdrive

Postby vonRasmussen » Tue Nov 13, 2007 8:50 pm

Hi all!

This evening I've have done some testing asked for by Synology Support, as the LAN performance on my CS407 is not acceptable.

The test was to connect the LAN cable from the CS407 to my PC to see if the performance improved (unfortunately it did not).

Now returning to the original configuration connecting my PC and my two NAS servers to via the router I can ping the CS407, I can use the web based administration tool but I cannot map the shared folders on the CS407 nor can I see the unit, when browsing "Microsoft Windows Network". :x

Can any one of you kind people help me to map my CS407 shared folder again?

Kind regards
vonRasmussen

My setup
* Thecus N2100 running RAID 1 with two Seagate 250 GB disks (ST3250620AS)
* Dell Dimension 8300 Pentium 4 2,8 GHz with 1,5 GB RAM (Windows XP Pro w. latest updates)
* Synologic CS407 running RAID5 with three Seagate 500 BG disks (ST3500630AS)
* Linksys WRT54G 100 Mbit router (all of the above units wire to the router – no ‘wirelessness’ involved)

::Topic will be moved to File Server::

When browsing via "Microsoft Windows Network" it may not show, if your workgroup is not the same, please make sure that "WORKGROUP" is in capital letters on all of your computers and all of your Synology products.

Also, to map a drive, you can use the Synology Assistant to map it for you
Also, you can use Windows Explorer to map a drive, under "Tools/Map Drive"
Or you can use the following command.
Code: Select all
net use z: \\cubestation\public

Hi Franklin!

Thanks for your input.
The workgroup name is identical on all units, and Tools->Map Networkdrive does not work.

The only thing that worked was, as you suggested, to use the Synology Assistant to map the drives.
Still, after mapping some of the drives via Synology Assistant I cannot use "net use z: \\TheCube\Data" or Tools->Map Networkdrive. Only when I use the IP address (instead of the server name "TheCube") I can map drives without help from Synology Assistant.

What could be the cause for this?

It could be that your windows network has not been installed yet, I recognized this too on some XP installations:
Go to "network locations" and use "configure small homenetwork" or similar, I have it only in german (*kleines Firmen- oder Heimnetzwerk einrichten"

When done so you should be able to see all computers in your workgroup.

I'm having a similar problem, and I've just gone through the network setup suggested by HarryPotter and that hasn't helped.

I've identified my software firewall, Zone Alarms, is blocking me (it wasn't yesterday, though). What settings do I need to alter to allow it to work?

Here's my current situation in case it's relevant:
I installed a new harddrive in my computer yesterday, and reinstalled windows. I was able to connect to the CS407 yesterday, and access shares, but now I can't.

I can log on to the server, both via a webpage or the Synology Assistant.
However, I can't map any drives, via the Synology Assistant or the My Computer Map Network Drive method. Plus the two network drives I set up yesterday won't connect.

When I switch zonealarms off, this problem goes away. But I want it to work with Zonealarms on, and it was working, yesterday!
What could be causing this?

Oops. that was embarrassing. It turns out I had some deleted my home networ's IP range from Zone Alarms trusted locations.

Move along, nothing to see here. :)
