Transfer intermittently slows to <1MB/s

Postby calebr » Wed May 23, 2012 9:46 pm

I'm having a problem with intermittent extremely slow data transfers. I've got a DS-1512+ that's running DSM 4.0-2228. It's connected to a GS108T gigabit switch via dynamic LAG, with jumbo frames enabled on all devices.
I transfered about 50GB of data (small files) without problems and at acceptable speeds (60MB/s) last week, but on my second data transfer of 50GB today, the transfer speed has dropped to less than 1MB/s after transferring about half the data. I restarted the transfer several times, with the same result - good speed for the first 10 minutes, and then slowing to a crawl for about 60 minutes. It then returns to a slower, but more acceptable speed of around 15MB/s.
I'm transferring data from a laptop connected directly to the switch (gigabit ethernet and jumbo frames enabled on the laptop, too).

Any thoughts about why this could be happening? Neither system seems stressed - DSM4 tracks my DS CPU and memory utilization at around 20% and 40%, respectively.

Hi,

Check that the laptop is not trying to index everything or your antivirus is not trying to scan network drives - might help

Another Network 'Slowness' Thread.

Postby trippertych » Sat Jun 23, 2012 10:35 pm

Hi,

I have a DS1512+ and have been having speed issues whilst trying to tranfer data from my PC to the Synology via gigabit ethernet. Within FileStation, if I try using the COPY and then PASTE function to transfer my files, the transfer rate doesn't exceed 1 MB/s. If I try the COPY TO... fucntion instead, I can reach (on average) 30MB/s. A great improvement, but still not that as quick as one would expect. Why is there such a difference between the two copying functions from within Filestation?

Also, if I try and copy a folder (from PC to DS via FS using either of the aforementioned copying methods) containing 1-2 gigs of files (approximately 5000 files), it runs at around 30MB/s for 50% of the amount, then decreases almost instantaneously to 100 - 500Kb/s for the remainder. Crazy!

Has anyone had any success with similar issues?

Cheers.

I had similar problems on my DS1812+. After uninstalling all packages the problem seemed gone. The problems returned however, but only when copying lots of small files or when downloading News (during Verify/Repair). These latter two were easy enough to comprehend:

- Copying small files is painfully slow, so you will see huge fluctuations during typical file/directory copying. Large files are transfered quickly but speeds drop temporarily when small files are encountered/copied.
- Verify/Repair is very very disk intensive for large News downloads, because the processor has to do checksums using THE WHOLE News post. The intensive disk usage effectively blocks nearly all access to the drive(s), which also shows itself in considerably lower download speeds at these moments.
