Extremely slow read and write to/from new DS211

Postby edgrumly » Sat Feb 26, 2011 10:08 pm

Greetings,

I'm a new owner of a DS211. I've currently got one of the Seagate LP 2TB 5900RPM drives inside. There is nothing in the other bay currently.

On the initial boot up and install, I had the DS211 do the scan of the drive to identify bad sectors. Nothing exciting turned up.

Since then, I've been able to access the DS211, but am having extremely slow transfer speeds to and from it. I understand there is a little loss of top end speed by not using a 7200RPM HD, but I'm getting 200-300k per second transfers between the DS211 and an external HD that is plugged into the USB drive in the front of it.

I've regularly get similar speeds over the ethernet connection it has to an N speed wireless router.

When I plug an ethernet cable between my laptop and the DS211, I've seen it as high as 2-4MB per second, but no where near the 50MB per second I've seen on some review sites.

I really want to love the server, but it is cripplingly slow. Any ideas on what I should look for to troubleshoot?

Did you get to the bottom of this?

I'm stuck at 11mb write speeds , on a gigabit network!

did anyone solve this issue?
I have a DS211 and am getting file transfer speeds of 400kb/s to 1.4MB/S :( :( :(

connected through the supplied cat5 cable (came with synology) to a gigabit LAN

using Win 7 (64bit) Pro

am having similar problems... got a DS211 with 2x2TB WD Greens (EARS model)
running win 7 Enterprise Edition, 64bit..

am using DSM 3.1...

got the Synology hooked up to gigabit port on motherboard with a direct Cat5 cable (came supplied with Synology)

Transferring files from PC to Synology...

for large files max speed I've seen is approx 20MB/S

otherwise its anywhere from 300kb/s to 1.5MB/s

very slow!

I should be getting speeds of at least 50 MB/S (write)...

anyone know what the issue is?

Does anyone have a solution? I am also using a new DS211 and I'm having trouble with transfer speeds. Currently only getting 300kb/s to 600kb/s.

I have exactly the same issue, have tried multiple solutions including as some of the forum sites have stated switching on and off the various applications. Ended up purchasing new Netgear Gigabit router DGND 3300v2 because I thought that was the issue (mine was a little old) also purchase CAT6 cable to go with that just in case. Getting somewhere like 1.5-2 Mb/s!!!, same as before the new router purchase! as edgrumly says "nice server, but it is cripplingly slow". Some answers from Synology would be nice.

I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit with an i5, with latest DSM 3.1 and Synology DS211j.

My DS1010+ has gotten extremely slow since installing the latest DSM... At times I count five seconds to open a 100k file from the NAS, all via gigabit hardware. Re-booting the NAS helps for a little while, but not for long... I'm not savvy enough with Linux to look under the hood for clues... I think there is something in the latest DSM that is bogging the system down somehow.

I would suggest either forcing the Synology to work at 100Mbps or connect this to a 100Mbps switch and things will be like normal. I have just purchased a DS411j and it gave me a 400kbps transfer rate over ethernet... stupid really I think it is a big bug with DSM 3.1 lets hope for a fix soon or am getting my money back.

I am only getting 20kB/sec!

And my post is OVER ONE MONTH old and without a response!

+1 to slow speeds however the slowness is cpu bound (100% cpu usage) and looks to be an ext3 to ntfs conversion?

8120 3.2 99.8 /bin/ntfs-3g -o uid=1024,gid=100 /dev/sdq1 /volumeUSB1/usbshare

I don't think so because if its a ext3 issue then the problem would be the same when you are using 100mbps or 1gig. I have also tested using iscsi and it is the same issue remember iscsi is raw data written with no file system format with only disk commands and it is still the same.

If you have mentioned that there was another post I think it is time you should call them to log a support call, I will contact them next week if no official response is done.

Who ever say that we can not push enough bandwidth to satuate a 1gb link is so wrong.

Reference for sata speed

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA plus raid and stuff we should be able to do better.

Good luck.

I have just tried the beta firmware 3.1.1725 :) not sure if they are trying to be smart or they just avoided the issue altogether.

They have reduced the auto LAN sync speed to 100mbps rather than 1gbps and to my surprise the issue is gone.

Getting 40mbs write speed and 80mbps read.

QA: when are able to use the 1gbps?

Are these speeds FTP / Over the network / Synology File Maganger???

Win 7 / OSX or Linux ?

What MTU are you using ( Jumbo packets or not?)

Ive just bought a DS209+II and it can only achieve the following:

1.2gb mp4 file benchmark

FTP (Filezilla) Download from NAS - 83mb/s
FTP (Filezilla) Upload to NAS - 37mb/s

Synology Filestation:

Download from NAS - 46.7 mb/s
Upload to NAS - 31mb/s

Figures are megabytes per second.

I was expecting better than that as the reviews say its quicker. Updated it to latest firmware before I got it up & running. May have been a bad move, anyways hope this gives you some kind of comparison. :)

I'm having the same issue but with a twist. We are using the DS211+ as the file storage for the workgroup network of our small non-profit. We have approximately 40 users with 4 of them using Windows 7. On those machines, and only on those 4 machines, the users were experiencing extremely slow transfer speeds. All other users (Mac & XP) are fine. But here's a strange workaround for the moment. If I set those 4 users as administrator accounts their transfer speeds are fine, it's only when they are set as standard users.

I have no idea but am wondering if this is a Windows 7 issue on diskstation.

I have also tested it. I have 5 computers (2 on win7 and 2 on xp and 1 on mac) only windows 7 experience low transfer speed of 20-50kbps. Other than that, other computers have transfer speed of 6-10mbps in 10/100mbps network.

I hope synology can solve this problem asap
