Slow Remote Access Speed - Where's the bottleneck?

Postby trevah » Tue Apr 17, 2012 10:15 pm

Hello, this is my very first NAS so please bear with me. I'm not technologically inept by any means, this is simply a new area for me.

Anyways, I've successfully set up the server on a static IP with a connection to an apple airport extreme. Wireless transfers across the network run around 8mb/s (megabytes per) if I download through the web UI logged in locally. Logged in on the same network but through the synology DDNS runs me at ~7mb/s. If I log in from another computer on another network entirely, download speeds are 80-90kb/s, which is essentially useless for picture/video viewing.

Speedtest.net clocks our upload at 2-2.5 mb/s, so I'm confused as to what the possibly bottleneck could be. I would assume that if the NAS is transmitting at 7mb/s locally across the DDNS and the router is limited by our internet speed which uploads at 2mb/s, the remote viewing speed should be around 2mb/s.

Thoughts?

Bonus question: I know wired transfer rates for this router should be about 100mb/s. Am I in the right ballpark for wireless transfers at 7-8mb/s?

Hi !

I'm facing the same issue (more or less) when downloading a file with the File Station (https connection), from the Internet.

My LAN is wired (100 Mbps), and the usual upload speed to the Internet thru my router is around 1 Mbps. Any file download from my NAS (DS-112j) to the Internet should be around this same value (1 Mbps). It turns out, it is currently around 500 kbps only.

Any idea ?
