NTFS Formatting and speed tests

In DSM 2.2, i dont have the choice to formt in NTFS...
Is it limited to reading and writing only?

I missed this possibility too, but I am already happy to be able to backup my data onto an ntfs hdd. It is very slow, but ok, it works.

So this means first you'll have to format your external disk to NTFS in Windows, before connecting it to the Synology?
Did you also check if the file timestamps ar ok in the backups? This is a problem with FAT32 formatted disks..

I can't get the nas to see my external disk formatted in NTFS, can you tell me what I have to do to get it to work ? I have a 107+

Hm, no idea, its just plug'n play.

To detect the HDD is not a question of NTFS. It may be that your HDD or your HD enclosure is not compatible with the NAS.

In any case its off topic, as it has nothing to do with the format.

I did some tests to compare the write performance between NTFS and EXT3 (native).
The local backup (all other services disabled) with native format was about 4-5 times faster.......:

NAS: DS207+
USB: Samsung SP1654N
Local backup: 145 GB, 4 files 30-40 GB

Time NTFS: 12 hours 19 min.
Time EXT3: 2 hours 47 min.

So, AFAICT this uses the in-kernel module? Eh... good luck with that in that case.

Can anybody advise me on this? It seems to take a long time to format the external drive in NTFS...I'll have a Maxtor 1TB, so I want to make sure I do it right, and not wasting time.
Hopefully they can improve this before the final release..

Yeah, so choose a quick format on Windows next time, will take about 10 seconds... If definitely won't be faster on DS. And no, it's not possible to format drives to NTFS on DS at the moment.

Hey guys are there any extra steps I'm missing here;
with my 108j
1) Plug NTFS external hard drive into back of DS
2) in user privilages, set the admin up to have write access to the USB hard drive

When I go to change a folder name within the file manager on my usbdrive it tells me "the selected folder is read only"

I have to fill my new 2-TB HDDs (WD Caviar Green WD20EADS in my 207+) with the files (typically DVD-ISO) on an external drive (1 TB Samsung HD 103UJ).
I did this as a satashare with File Station explorer from the Syno. (firmware beta 914)
I noticed that it went very slow and therefore I did a measurement: a single copy job of 53 GB took 6:30' (390') and this at night with no other activity on the Syno.
I then did connect (eSata) the same disk to my PC (Win XP, Intel 2.8 GHz): a single copy job of 43 GB took 90' (also as the only activity on PC enSyno).
There is definitely something wrong here.

sounds like a DMA issue. Have a look at /var/log/messages

If you find somethink like that, your enclosure is not compatible.

Hi,
I checked: no such messages.
I use 2 Vantec NextStar3 enclosures: one with a HDD NTFS filesystem and the other with EXT3 format by Synology.
Only the NTFS-HDD was that slow.

NTFS write is more then slow at this beta, use ext3.
