CS407 Degraded raid 5

Postby Mrhardware » Sun May 17, 2009 4:59 pm

I had a degraded raid 5 a couple of weeks ago disk 2 status crashed. :(
I removed it and replaced it with a spare identical drive (HDS721010KLA330 Hitachi) which was new and unused bought at same time as CS.
Intresting this was that this drive was the first 1Tb Hard drive that synology tested as compatable with the x07 range but know the compatability list says not compatable with the x07 range ?.
The system rebuilt fine and the removed drive was wiped and tested ok using manufacturers test software. :D
Today degraded raid again and it was disk 2 again which was the new drive . :( I have removed drive and tested using manufacturers software without errors,
i wiped it and put it back in CS and it is rebuilding. My CS has run without error for 2 years but has now degraded twice in
2 weeks after the last software update is this a bug in the firmware or is my CS dying ?. :(

I have had a similar experience with a CS407e, although with me it was Disk1. I replaced it 3 until my supplier refused to replace the drive again.
What helped though was sending the kernel log to Synology support.

Use http://{YourCS407}:5000/webman/index.cgi?debug=1 and save the file as kernel.dat

Support will probably ask you to do the same, but now you can send it with your support request.

Good luck,
Hans

I too suffered form the exact same problem as you, always disk2 being kicked out of the array.

In the end, I received replacement sata and power cables from Syno support and its working absolutely flawlessly ever since.

Cheers

It seems that the replacement SATA cables do do the trick. MY CS-407 has been running for almost 3 weeks. It woud crash every week when using the old cables. Similar thing happened to CS-406 at work. But I just replaced the old ones with standard SATA cables coming with motherboards (we have lots of them). They are a bit too long, but after some organizing, they fit in the box nicely. Since replacing the cables, CS-406 does not hang any more so far.

I have had the same experience - after receiving replacement SATA cables from Synology my CS407 has become stable.
There has obviously been a quality problem with the original cables.

Support requested a Kernal dump which i sent and they confirmed that there were multiple sata cable errors.
They have posted me out a new set of cables. :D
Hopefully this will fix problem. I will post back when tested.

Thanks Synology

Cables arrived today full set of SATA and power cables. :D
First impressions are that the new SATA cables are wider that the originals, they are about the width of
normal SATA cables used in a base unit.
I have fitted and am going to run for a couple of days then resend a kernal dump to support.

Thanks support for quick delivery posted out 22nd May and arrived 26Th May 4 Days whick includes a bank holiday where no post delivered.

I can confirm this too, i guess synology realized the failure rate of the previous cables..

+1

Also, they appear to have a much tighter grip on both the HD as well as the controller. The new x09 models come with these new cables directly.

I have to say I'm having the same problems.

Always disk two out of the array.

Its rebuilding as I type this :x

Disks are always fine, just the CS407 spits them out of the array ....

If you raise a support ticket and follow the instructions given by support iam sure
the nice people from support will send u a new set of cables.
Have you checked your cables ? do the look as wide as standard base unit sata cables.
A lot of people having this issue have reported that the new cables are wider.
