secure SMTP for mobile use

Postby m.bijl » Fri Feb 17, 2012 4:27 pm

Hi,

I installed Mailstation and Mailstation Plus. Everything works. I receive mail I can send mail through webmail. But I want to send mail through my DS using my SMTP server.

Because "all" ISP block tcp port 25 out of their network I have to change my smtp server in Outlook everytime I get home or at another customer. The solution would be installing/configuring a smtp server which needs authentication and SSL or TLS. The port then would be 587 or 465 (legacy?).

The only forum topics I read are about relaying outgoing mail throug the ISP or Google?! I want to be autonomous so I don't relay and I want to be able to send mail with Outlook through my DS even being outside of my LAN/ISP-network.

I configured smtp in my roundcube settings. But there is still nothing listening on port 587 or 465. Can anybody help me setup my mail server? Thanks in advance.

To realy enable SMTP TLS you should add these lines at the bottom of your main.cf:

smtpd_enforce_tls = no
smtpd_tls_loglevel = 1
smtpd_use_tls = yes

This file is in the folder /usr/syno/mailstation/etc.
Then redirect port 587 to 25 at your router. This way normal smtp still works on port 25 which is necessary and you can also connect in a secure way through port 587.

Just wanted to say thanks for this. Port 25 outbound is blocked at work and this lets me send email through my DiskStation at home, even using the default Mac Mail.app SMTP setting, "Use default ports: (25, 465, 587)". Works like a charm.
