Installing DSM 3.2 on unsupported device (207+)

Postby johndoe » Mon Aug 29, 2011 9:12 am

Hi,

Can anybody tell me how to install DSM 3.2 on a device that is officially unsupported? It concerns a DS207+. I once read somewhere it's possible, but I can't seem to find it.

Thanks in advance!

I wont say it would be impossible to do that but I will say it will be damn near. The problem is that the processor in the DS207+ is different from the ones installed in all the supported models. So you wont be able find an image compiled for the right processor. I can't really see a way around that but I would love to be proven wrong. :)

Well, it seems that I can at least prove you wrong on the fact that the processor model is different. The DS110j is still supported and also has an ARM processor (the x07+ models have an ARM processor as well afaik). Would that make things much easier, or is this just one of the many obstacles to be taken.

Potentially, you can try to apply the tricks used in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=128&t=15761 to allow install DSM3.x on old ARM-based diskstations.
DS-411 (DSM 4.2-3202) w/ 2x WD10EFRX + 1x HD154UI
DS-106j (DSM 3.0-1357), PATA-to-SATA adapter, 2.5" HM250HI

Well that's the problem, ARM isn't just ARM. Unlike x86 processors, different ARM processors aren't necessarily binary compatible. If you look at the wiki page for installing ipkg you can see that there are 3 ipkg feeds for different ARM processors. That tells me there are differences, else they should have been able to use the same feed.

In the thread maxxfi links to, the trick works because the 106e, 107 and 108j all use the same PPC processor, the mpc8241. It is a brilliant trick btw, it gives me hope for when my own DS209+II goes out of support since there appear to be a compatible processor in the DS210.

I have read in another thread that 207+ will be supported with a DSM 3.2 release (not beta) so if you have patience...

Are you sure you aren't thinking of the Apple Lion compatibility fix for the x07 series?
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=39441

I think it would pretty strange for Synology to announce a special compatibility firmware upgrade for the x07 series if they were going to release 3.2 for them anyway. (Lion support is included in 3.2.)

Not the above. I an referring to this one:
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=39353

zelta413 says "Synology support just reply me they will make a special edition of DSM 3.2 to DS207+" ... but whether this is the already released DSM is difficult to know.

I believe it is since that thread is mainly about the missing Lion support.
