Any news on the new Seagate 1TB/platter drives?

Postby richmaple » Wed Nov 02, 2011 3:38 pm

Wondering if there's any news on the new Seagate Barracuda drives that are 1TB/platter, such as the 3TB ST3000DM001 or the 2TB ST2000DM001. They sound pretty ideal for NAS with 64MB cache, 7200rpm, and lower heat... but they just came on the market and it's been pretty quiet. Other sites have reviewed test units so Synology, have you been testing them too?

thanks!

I've just set up a 1511+ with 4 of the ST3000DM001. Worked without a fuss. I did upgrade to DSM 3.2 first for what it's worth.

I just Purchased online at Amazon:
    - (1) Synology 1511+
    - (5) 3TB Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache (ST3000DM001)
HERE is a review of the drive compared to others. Looks pretty impressive!
I'll let you know how it works when I get everything here & setup.

The Seagate ST3000DM001 3TB drive shows up on the official Synology hardware compatibility list for some Synology products (I did not check all models):
DS211+: http://www.synology.com/support/hd.php? ... duct_id=66
DS411+: http://www.synology.com/support/hd.php? ... duct_id=60
DS1511+: http://www.synology.com/support/hd.php? ... duct_id=67

For other current Synology products, such as the DS2411+, which do have other desktop drives listed in their compatibility lists, this Seagate drive does not (yet) show up.

And yet another group of current Synology products, such as the DS3611xs or the RS3411xs, only have enterprise drives listed in their compatibility lists, even though we know that these products do work with desktop drives.

Based on the above, would it be a safe bet to think that this Seagate drive is likely to work well with most current Synology models, even though it does not (yet) appear on the official lists?

I decided to take the plunge and check the Seagate ST3000DM001 3TB drives out for myself. Ordered 2 from Amazon ($209 per disk; not bad given the current prices) and installed these in a RS3411xs.

For now I selected to use them in a RAID 0 array (no fault tolerance) just to see if they work.
The disks were recognized immediately and are currently going through the initialization and checking process. Temperature is around 37 degrees Celsius / 99 degrees Fahrenheit.

I will post further updates here.

Update: the disks are working just fine, although I have not yet tested RAID6 which is what I ultimately want to be running; I need more disks for that. Working temperature after initialization settled around 34-35 degrees Celsius / 93-95 degrees Fahrenheit. SMART info is pretty normal. Performance is good; I mostly store media files and can play multiple streams of video without any issues.

I've set up and am running a pair of ST2000DM001-9YN1 on a 211J that are faster than a jackrabbit on nitro. They run in the 106-110F (41-44C) range when in operation, they heat up a bit when things get busy. I run Memeo Backup Pro on my two systems which keep it and my Buffalo 1TB busy most of the time. But I should switch to Acronis or the software that came with my Synology NAS.

I approve of this model!

myCloud, I'm thinking of buying DS1512+ and five ST3000DM001 harddrives. How about the noise of the drives? Is it completely quiet, relatively quiet? Can you tell me what your opinion on the noise is? :)

They are extremely quiet. I can barely hear them stepping from a foot away.

Finally bought another 4 of the Seagate ST3000DM001 drives off Amazon. Interestingly enough, the new ones are manufactured in China whereas the 2 I bought earlier had been made in Thailand...

Note that Seagate released a firmware upgrade for all 1TB/platter drives (see http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/e ... Q/223651en) so I downloaded and upgraded the original 2 drives. The new drives did not need this upgrade (I did run it on them just to make sure).

With the 2 older drives and the 4 new drives I was finally able to set up a RAID 6 array as I had originally planned. Everything went very smoothly and the array is running nicely. Performance is good, the drives are quiet and stay pretty cool (same temperature range as reported earlier).

Based on my experience I can recommend these drives.
