WD15EARS - Coming Soon

Postby RandyV » Sat Jan 16, 2010 5:45 pm

I had to RMA one of the WD15EADS-002SB0 drives in my DS409+ due to a high error read rate.

WD is replacing it with a WD15EARS-00Z5B1. Never heard of that model, but it is listed on the WD site as a Green drive and I can only assume it is a newer version of the WD15EADS.

Will post my results with the LCCs etc once it arrives and I get it going in my DS409+. If anyone an experience with this drive in a Syno box, post up.

Thanks. Do your WD15EARS have the -00Z5B1 suffix or something else?

I also ordered following Seagate (ST31500541AS) "Seagate Barracuda LP SATA 3Gb/s - 1.5 To 5900 RPM 32 Mo Serial ATA II"

It seems that there's some issues also with the Seagate in terms of reliability....I will see. But I don't know if we can measure the LCC on Seagates.

Hi ludovic!
I ordered two Seagate ST31500341AS - "Seagate Hd sataII 1.5TB barracuda 7200.11 32MB 7200rpm".
I've not seen LCC attribute in SMART panel on Disk Station Manager of my DS408 where there are installed 2 ST31000340AS.
Bye!

Hello, I did not ordered this reference (ST31500341AS) because it seems there was some issues with some firmwares.

Quick update: got my WD15EARS-00Z5B1 installed today and the array is currently rebuilding. There's constant activity so no LCC problems as of yet. Will let everyone know what happens tomorrow.

ST31500341AS produced recently, comes with new firmware; no issues are reported on new firmware version.
Have you heard some about it?
Thanks in advance!

I'm considering buying the new WD15EARS or old WD15EADS for a DS210j but still have some questions:

-Did you get the WD15EARS working in your NAS without any issues (like LLC)?
-Is there any change in power consumption between both models, especially during idle time?
-Is there any change in performance between both models, due to the bigger cluster size and increased cache?
-Would you buy them again or would you recommend something else?

I know the WD15EADS are officially supported but they are currently harder to find and more expensive than the WD15EARS...

i too would like to run with the WD15EARS disks in 207+ and possibly 107+.

It would be nice to get synology eyes on when this model is being supported - its quite likely to be a smash-hit in synology units, since its fairly low-priced according to its opponents with lower cache etc.

Synology please respond
