4Tb or more on DS210j?

Postby wlad » Fri Apr 20, 2012 9:34 am

Hi All,

currently I have a DS210j with 1Tb (on one HDD) and am looking to expand its capacity. In relation, would appreciate some feedback on the possibilities/limitations.
- The original data sheet claims that the DS210j supports up to 4Tb, and the HDD compatibility list shows that 4Tb HDDs are supported. Is there a total limit of 4Tb on the DS210j, irrespective of the size of the used HHDs? Or could one install 2x4Tb?
- Would it be ok to add to my current 1x1Tb a 1x3Tb HDD?
- WHat would be a recommended RAID mode/setup which would allow to say protect the 3Tb HDD using some of the 1Tb HDD?

Cheers.

The max size will keep getting higher as the new hard drive's comes out, the current max size is 4TB disk's, so all in all the max size for now is 8TB.

sure no problem.

If you want some kind of protection, and use different disk size the 2 bay system can only make RAID 1, and that means that you loose 2TB, meaning the RAID 1 will be a mirrored 1TB, (same size as smallest disk), SHR makes more sense with a 4 bay disk DS and up.

I tried to find a list but couldn't ... Is there a list of compatible drives >= 2TB ?? I remember long ago there were issues with various brands' 2gb drives (when they were the biggest available!). With HD prices still so high, I want to invest in a couple of 2GB+ drives, but want them to be as trouble free as my trusty 1TB's I have now!
