NAS connection failed with new Netgear Router

Postby wmassie » Wed Mar 28, 2012 12:27 am

I've just switched broadband provider from ADSL to cable with Virgin Media. The new router supplied is a Netgear Superhub and it connects to the web, runs a wireless network and allows my pc and laptop to see each other and share folders... all good there...

However the NAS although showing as a device that is trying to connect to the router none of my other PC's or my media streamer can connect or see the NAS. I ran Synology Assistant and did a search. It found the NAS DiskStation and listed it and identified it's IP address but after a minute of trying it comes up 'Status' Connection Failed.

Tried plugging in my old speedtouch router just in case the NAS was damaged. All worked fine, all my other PC's and media streamer can see and connect to the NAS, but obviously I need the new router to connect to the internet before anyone suggests staying with what works.

Has anyone had problems connecting their Synology NAS to a netgear virgin media router and if so can you please help me. Without access to my NAS I can't see any of my files.

Ok so I've solved this myself, a bit obvious once you know what is wrong. Essentially the new router has come with a similar but ultimately difference IP address, my old speedtouch router was 192.168.1.1 the new Netgear router is 192.168.0.1. This meant my default gateway had changed as that is the same as your router IP so my NAS was not only trying to talk to the wrong IP address but it's own IP address wasn't part of the range of available IP addresses for the router.

What I had to do was run the Synology DSAssistant software, it found my NAS but couldn't connect as described in my original post, I then selected the NAS and clicked 'Connect' and it took me through a configuration process. You need to know the login details for your Synology NAS to give to the DSAssistant software, then give it your default gateway and give it a new IP address, it seemed to have already predicted the other settings so that was all I needed. Then oked that and it now said connected. I selected 'Connect' again and it took me to the URL log-on screen for the web interface.

You need to note that the URL for the log-on screen has changed in line with your new IP address for the NAS. So my old NAS IP was 192.168.1.124 the new address I told it to be was 192.168.0.124. The URL link to access the NAS has obviously also changed to ...

http://192.168.0.124:5000/

Although I could access the NAS via the URL interface the NAS was still not visible to my media streamer or to my other PC's connected to the router and the bitorrent application built into my NAS wasn't connecting or downloading anything.

The answer to the bitorrent and I think to the media streamer was to set-up port forwarding again on my router. I'm not sure which port forwarding worked for the media streamer or whether just sorting out the IP and default gateway sorted that out but I opened up HTTP port 80 to 80, HTTPS 443 to 443, FTP ports 20 to 21. What definitely got the Bitorrent working was opening ports 6881-6889.

What I'm still figuring out is how my other PC's can see the NAS on the network, they're all part of the same workgroup but I think I need to tell my PC's that the default gateway has changed. I can't see the NAS but strangely the windows 7 pc's can see each other's shared folders. When I figure this out I'll update you. Hope this helps others. Let me know.

Ok so sorted network visibility of NAS with other computers. When I first connected the Virgin Network the computer popped up a window saying you're connected to a new network, is this a home network, work network or public network. I selected home network and forgot about it. Well my windows 7 machine had only gone and enabled 'Homegroups' which overrides the older 'Workgroups' network sharing. Unfortunately the NAS is set up to us Workgroups as are the rest of my laptops.

To disable or remove Homegroups you have to go to control panel, select Homegroups, in the setting window that opens near the bottom select 'Leave the homegroup…'. Unfortunately for me that didn't work as it should as one of the files associated with homegroups had become corrupted but it should have worked.

A little searching later and I found instructions saying, locate and delete the following file...

C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking\idstore.sst

Then go back to Homegroups settings window and run the troubleshooter, it detects the missing file, repairs it and now you can 'Leave the homegroup...'

Instantly I defaulted back to my old workgroup and all my shared drives on the NAS were visible. Few. :D

Thank you so much, wmassie.
Had exactly the same problem, switching routers and lost NAS visibility on Windows 7 computer. Your fix wit deleting idstore and going out of the homegroup did it.
XP was fine though.
Saved my day!

Normally, when the new router has a different LAN IP than the old one (mostly 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1), the easiest way is to change that LAN IP in the router LAN set up. Then no changes are needed for any other device.

However, for the Netgear superhub it looks like this is not possible:

The Hub can broadcast two guest networks but only on the same band as your primary WiFi network. The guest networks have their own fixed IP ranges, which prevent you from switching the router’s main IP range to the 192.168.1.x and 192.168.2.x ranges. This can be irritating if you just want to slot it into a network that already has static devices on those ranges. http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/wireless ... -super-hub

Hi I wonder if anyone reading this thread can help?

I'm using BT Infinity having recently switched from ADSL. On the original router supplied by BT I could see my NAS box's Dyndns web page and photo station from within my home network. However that router overheated and was swapped out. The replacement refused to let me see photo station or my website's external facing address. I've abandoned BT's home hub and replaced it with a netgear WNDR4500. The problem still persists.

Has anyone had to open any ports to allow the external photo station web address to be visible?
