HP MediaVault Disk Mount

Postby sporteus » Thu Mar 10, 2011 8:45 pm

My old NAS is an HP MediaVault mv2020. The motherboard failed on the server prior to me being able to get all the data off the disks. Murphy's law is a real PITA. :x

The file system on the disks is a modified Reiser file system. There are some articles about how you can mount these drives on another system to pull the data off of them. The question I have is whether this might be possible to do directly on the DiskStation DS211+. I think the right utilities are there, but need some expert feedback before attempting this.

Here's the site talking about the disk layout:

Here is one of the referenced blogs that I think is possible to do on the DiskStation directly:

Any feedback is appreciated.

I'm not sure that those instructions are still valid (that blog post is from 2007).
I remember to have seen utilities to mount reiser filesystems on the old versions of DSM,
but no longer at least from 3.0 (maybe even 2.3).
But maybe you can try to plug the HDD into a PC and boot a 'live CD' Linux distro.

Nuts. So if I'm reading your response correctly, DSM 3.1 doesn't include ReiserFS support at all. Dang it! I thought I had all the pieces. (Hey Synology, how about releasing a version of the DiskStation with a full blown copy of Linux running?? Call it a hackers playground deluxe special limited edition and sell it with no support.)

From another thread, I pulled this command, which I think confirms that reiser is not supported since it's not even listed.

TheNAS> cat /proc/filesystems
nodev sysfs
nodev rootfs
nodev bdev
nodev proc
nodev tmpfs
nodev sockfs
nodev pipefs
nodev anon_inodefs
nodev rpc_pipefs
nodev inotifyfs
nodev devpts
ext3
ext2
ext4
nodev ramfs
nodev nfs
nodev usbfs
nodev ecryptfs
vfat
nodev fuse
fuseblk
nodev fusectl

Problem is, I don't have a desktop, only a laptop. So doing anything with a hard drive natively is a PITA. I did just buy a Seagate external expansion drive which is coming tomorrow. So, maybe I can use that housing, put the MediaVault disk in there, hook it to my laptop with linux running from a CD, and start praying. Sad thing is that I used to have a basement full of junk hardware before I decided to get away from that stuff a few years back.

If anyone has any brainstorms, please let me know. I really dont' want to resort to calling my linux-head buddy who will give me a world of grief about not having a linux workstation and how bad windows is. (didn't say I disagreed with him, just don't want the grief!)

I checked in ipkg/optware repository and it doesn't seem to be any package/tool for reiser.
So maybe one possibility would either to 'scavenge' in the old DSM revisions and extract busybox, mount, etc.
(but it may fail as libc is likely different version) or even go the hard way and compile some sources.

But before these, I'd suggest to wait for the external expansion and see what you can do with it.
