DS209 power supply failure - what's the fix?

Postby Cobalt19 » Sat Aug 04, 2012 5:08 pm

Hi. My DS209 suffered a few shutdowns due to sudden power failure. At first I assumed it was the domestic electricity supply to my home but I discovered yesterday that it is in fact the external power supy block which came with the unit 3 years ago.
There is something loose or damaged inside and that is despite the fact that this block has been stationery for 3 years.

Without power the DS is junk so how do I get a new power supply? Does it have to come from Synology or can I use another if I can get the spec from Synology?

Most annoying fault. Pls can you help?

First check with Synology if you can get a replacement (maybe under warranty?) otherwise just look at the power supply label and get any 'general purpose' PSU that provides 12V with at least the rating you read on your PSU and of course with same plug (which is a fairly common plug for compact power supplies).

Hi maxxfi - thanks for your reply.

Can I check - what do you mean when you say "with at least the rating you read on your PSU "?

Do you mean rating in 'current' in Amps? if not pls could you advise?

"rating" is the "ampere" you need.

So Volt must be exactly the same, probably 12V, and Amnpere at least the number you can see on your original power supply, but may also be a higher number.

Thank you Harry Potter.
May I ask - is it likely that Synology will replace my PSU at no cost after three years do you think?

Difficult to say. I guess at least they charge you for shipping costs. Asking them is for free

Dont use the "support form" but the "contact us" link

...in the meantime, I have looked at the PSU ("AC Adapter") and, because nothing is ever simple of course, it shows me me more than one figure, i.e. the following: -

INPUT 100-240V 50-60Hz 1.5 A (I assume this is Alternating Current or 'AC')

OUTPUT 12V 5.83 A ( I assume this is Direct Current or 'DC')

So if Synology fails to get a new PSU for me, is it sufficient for me to get one that is 12 Volt and 6 Amp, as long as it has the right type of end connector? I have no idea where to get such a thing so I am hoping Synology will send me one.

Exactly 12 V and at least 5.83 Ampere, yes.

You get such PSU everywhere in appropriate electronic or computer shops or internet.

Yes, please see the post from Harry Potter about which route to use for contacting them.
The result is that I have been told I have to buy a new PSU and it will cost me $45 ($30 + $15 for carriage to the UK) and that it should take around 5 days.

I did ask in the UK high street electronics retailer called Maplins if they sold a 12v 6A PSU but they said they don't. They performed a quick test in my Synology PSU and said the fault was in the 'block' and was likely a loose or broken connection, as it is intermittent. The trouble is, I am worried to leave it on now as I don't want my house burning down if the PSU catches fire for example. Naturally I am disappointed in Synology for producing a PSU which failed so quickly.

Can anyone tell me what the warranty length of time is for the DS209? - I think no what mine is only 2.25 years old.
