Playing MKV file from a CS-407

Postby tpg0007 » Fri Dec 05, 2008 6:41 pm

My video collection on the CS407 (firmware x.0722) has a lot of different formats, MKV, varies kinds of AVI etc. As they all come from different sources the encoding may not always be up to par with correct standards, so I've had to install 5 different media players on my Vista machine to be able to play all of them. For example, one of them can't play MKV file from the CS-407, but if that same MKV file is located on a networked laptop or locally, then there's no problem. Other players can handle MKV but have crappy GUI etc.

I guess what I'm asking is, can anyone recommend a good all around media player that's known to work well with the CS? Ones I'm using are Media Player Classic with K-Lite Codec Pack, GomPlayer, VLC Player, and mplayer.

Greetings tpg0007

I use Vista Ultimate on all of my Windows computers, and I can use WMP11, and K-Lite Codec Pack 4.2x full version (forgot which version I'm running, but I believe that K-lite is at version 4.3 right now), and I have no issues. I don't recommend using VLC as it doesn't support Soft-subs very well... in my opinion anyway.

Playing mkv files via a wired/wireless network resource or direct attach source shows no issue.

Note, this is over the CIFS protocol....

Hope this helps

I recommend XBMC, originally desgined for running on the old xbox (moddified) but has now been ported to Windows, MAC OSX, Linux (Ubuntu).

All in one solution plays every file and format i've thrown at it. All the codecs are included so it provides a consistent user experience.

Check it out at XBMC.org. I'm running it on Vista Ultimate x64, Ubuntu 8.10 x64, MAC OSX and an original xbox (moddified)
