Turn off "Open File - Security Warning" for Windows

Postby Lapin » Sun Nov 16, 2008 6:08 pm

Run INETCPL.CPL, and select the Security tab, Trusted sites
 Click Sites button
 Untick Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone
 Add the IP address of the Syno or file://ds207 (ds207 is the network name of my Syno). If you have 1 or more mapped drive(e.g. P:\ mapped to \\ds207\public), you may add P:\, windows will resolve the IP address for you. Note: You can also add the network shares to the Local Intranet zone, but there is more restriction as the trusted sites. For example, you will still get some warning for some java .exe.
 Click OK
 Select the low security level, click OK and close the dialog
It takes me ages to find this solution. I hope this will help some people.
:D

Added a post to also disable this "feature" under WinXP

Hi folks,

I'm adding the procedure to also disable this security on Windows ("Feature" which appears with SP2).
This will also work for people which prefers to add the NAS in Local Intranet instead the trusted sites as explained below.

 Run gpedit.msc
 Go to Local Computer Policy -> User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Attachment Manager
 Enable Inclusion list for low risk file types
 Add to this list the file extensions (ex. .exe; .bat; etc...) that you want to open without triggering this crap.

I hope it will help.

I have a direct question for you Franklin. I am very close to purchasing the DS209 and two enterprise WD HD. I have read here on at least a couple posts that users on a wireless laptop connection using Vista are having a problem reading or seeing their share folders/files. Has this been remedied my the firmware on the DS209? I will have one XpPro desktop (wired) and one wireless Vista laptop on the network. I am really concerned about the wireless situation regarding share folders/files. Do you have any information to make me feel better about my pending purchase? Thanks in advance from a rookie.

I got this to work in Windows 7 (and the same thing probably goes for Vista):

I followed the instruction from the first post by by Lapin, but still got the annoying dialog:
Open File - Security Warning
The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?
Name: <PATH>
Publisher: Unkown Publisher
From: <PATH>
[RUN] [CANCEL]

After following the instructions from the first post there is one more thing you need to do:
* Go back to the Internet Explorer settings (Run INETCPL.CPL).
* Go to the Security tab.
* Click on Custom Level...
* Find Launching applications and unsafe files (under Miscellaneous) and set it from Prompt to Enable.
* Press OK on all windows to close them (might need to restart IE if it's running).
* You should now be freed from the annoying warnings, go out and party!

It still amazes me IE settings influence a NAS like this :o.

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium, which doesn't come with the group policy editor (gpedit).
