Which Diskstation is the right for me?

Postby hallerstede » Sat May 26, 2012 11:24 am

Hi,

I want to backup my virtual Windows 2008r2 servers (vmware esxi; location a) using ntbackup to a Synology NAS which automatically syncs itself to a remote WAN location (again a Synology NAS; location b). Best would be if it is a 2way snyc, so I can apply the same backup logic at location b.

Thus I need a NAS that
1) supports iSCSI or NFS (so I can connect it as a datastore on my esxi server), that
2) supports remote replication, and that
3) provides approx. 1 TB of disk space.

Which DiskStation is the right one for me?

I do not need raid (redundancy is provided in the remote location).

Thank you so much for your help,
Stefan

Any DiskStation or RackStation could be used for the purpose you describe.

The important questions are as follows:-

1) How much data volume is your backup?
2) What is your retention policy for backup? You should use this to work out total space required (you say approx 1TB?)
3) What is your time window in which to perform backups? This affects whether you need a DS with aggregated network connections or ability to use 10GbE adapter. You should be able to calculate this in conjunction with (1).
4) What is your WAN link speed? Because most backups will be 'new' you should calculate your link speed has enough bandwidth to transfer *all* data both ways between backup schedules.

You also say you do not need RAID, however you may consider multiple disks for performance.

The easiest way to achieve synchronisation it to use 'Shared Folder Sync' on DSM. This can be scheduled or set to run whenever a file is created or modified.
