I am having the same difficulty deciding between these three NAS devices; can someone please confirm/deny my assumptions below?
My primary use will be backup and serving up 1080p video to devices in my house. These devices include PCs, a Boxee box, and a PS3.
Am I right in thinking that:
1. the Boxee box and PCs will not need any transcoding to be done by the DiskStation, but the PS3 will?
2. if I have to transcode 1080p files for the PS3, then the CPU and 128mb of the DS411j will be insufficient?
3. however if I convert the 1080p files on the DS411j to a format the PS3 can understand, then no transcoding will have to be performed, and the performance of the DS411j will be adequate?
4. the DS411j will be able to serve at least two HD streams, while downloading torrents?
Basically I am looking for the cheapest device which will keep up with my needs for the next couple of years... Ideally I would just go for the DS412+ and forget my worries, but £500 without drives is just too much for me - I could buy a PC for that!
Thanks in advance for your help.
1. yes
2. yes, it can't run transcoding.
3. yes then you don't need to transcode.
4. i don't know.
When I was planing on buying my NAS it was a price differences of 120€ for a PC without drives and OS with intel atom cpu. for a simlar chase and power using. DS412+ is easyer to setup, better interface, looks betre, comes with a lot of 3rd party packages ready to install, synology support, mabe not spend so much time troling the internet to setup all programs.
But comparing the DS412+ vs DS411j, the DS412+ can have more "Maximum Concurrent Download Tasks" 80 vs. 20, cloadstation can have 32 vs. 8 users. DS412+ have a higher Wife Appeal Factor, it have USB 3 for more disk, and a eSATA port, it can do transcoding.
