which DSM version to start with?

Postby step » Wed Sep 28, 2011 2:45 pm

My DS111 came in yesterday. It's my first NAS. I'm new to synology products.

I'm setting up the DS, please help me to make the right choice at the very start.

I see that many people in the synology forums regret that they ever upgraded to DSM version 3.2.
My DS111 came with DSM version 3.1.1613 on the SW CD.
My question is should I initialize my DS with 3.1.1613 or with a later version, and which one? I know nothing about the effective merits of each version.

I plan to use this DS for:
- file sharing and backup in my home LAN with Windows, Mac and linux workstations;
- streaming music to iPods;
- hosting a small web site with dynamic IP;
- file sharing for iPhone/iPod, although this is lower priority;
- streaming video maybe in the future, but not now.

The hard disk for this DS is a 2TB Samsung HD204UI with firmware upgrade. I will back up to two 1TB external USB disks, I think formatted as ext4 for performance reasons, although I'd have preferred NTFS for ease of connectivity to Windows PCs, but I understand that NTFS USB backup is dog slow, isn't it?

A list of possible DSM versions for my DS follows. Which one is right for me?

Thank you in advance.

Just go with 3.2. I think some people had trouble upgrading existing systems, so if you're starting clean, go with 3.2 to get the most out of your new toy :)

Thank you for your answer. I just got an answer from Synology support re the same question and they too suggest that I could start with version 3.2 directly. I'm leaning towards 3.2 now, though I just got two answers in total. I'll wait a couple more days, to see if more opinions come into this thread, then jump over 3.1 and start with 3.2.
