Take a look at the article: http://originwww.synology.com/support/n ... ews_id=162

A news release from 4 years ago doesn't help the issue as I believe that might be for certain models listed the DJ108j, DS207+, and DS508.

We need further proof that all Synology units support these features.

I just downloaded Open Office via Torrent and i peak at 4 MB/s (max for my connection) and avg. 3.2 MB/s. I just updated to 3.2-1955. Not sure if that had anything to do with it.. Trying another torrent now.

and I have also submitted an support ticket and I encourage anyone else with issues to do so.

This is what I received from Synology today:

Torrenting is a very complex and resource-intensive task from a CPU standpoint, and our torrenting features while useful are not as robust as a full-featured desktop torrent client. As you mentioned DHT is not implemented in our solution, nor are ‘web seeds’ or most other additional transfer mechanisms that have been added to torrents in recent years.

While the process of torrenting is not particularly taxing for a modern desktop with multiple high-performance cores and a substantial amount of RAM, the DS410 contains a single 1.06GHz PowerPC CPU and 512MB of DDR2 memory for handling all tasks of the DS410 including hard drive operations. While the functionality for torrenting is present on all our devices, our higher-end models are more capable of handling the torrenting process and I suspect this is likely the reason for your performance issues is simply the processing power limitations of the system you are currently using.

Kind Regards,

Andy D.

I'm running a DS1511+ with 3Gb RAM, which is pretty high up the performance scale, and I get the same issues. It's the one REALLY disappointing factor with the box. I bought it about a year ago so I could turn off an old PC I had doing BT and media streaming. But it's only borderline useful. As an example, I've currently got 3 torrents active each with 50+ peers and yet total download speed is only a few kbs maybe peaking at 20-30. It's one of the selling points of the box and yet it doesn't seem to perform. If it's so hard to get it to perform as they say, then just take it off the spec sheet, it's like selling a car with no engine.
In addition whenever I have the download station active it really kills the internet performance, so I schedule it to run overnight. I recently installed DSM 4 which has changed DLS to a package, hoping things might be better, but no such luck. Maybe this is part of a strategy on the part of Synology, so that DLS can be upgraded more frequently without having to release new versions of the OS. I'd like to think so anyway. In the meantime, I'm going back to my 5yo single core 486 with 1Gb RAM running XP and uTorrent, which runs rings around the DS1511.
Didnt mean to be negative, but it is really annoying.
Cheers

What you are experiencing is NOT a problem with synology products, it can be a result of:
Bad ISP
Bad router configuration/performance
Bad torrents

I've been using my 2 NASes to download torrents for a year now and I can safely say that there is NO PROBLEM with the download station, I constantly download at 2 mbps which is the maximum for me.

mmmm. Funny that uTorrent through the same router, ISP etc doesn't have the same issues.

make sure that your firewall in the synology box is doing all the routing and open up DMZ to the IP on the synology.

I run DSM 3.2-1955 on the 1511+ and consistently get 3.8MB/s (max speed for my Internet service).

Make sure Encryption is set to Always, as ISPs frequently rate-limit known torrent traffic, and the encryption will prevent it from being identified as such. Set your Max peers to 400 or so.

If you still are getting consistently slow speeds, then you probably need to open up your firewall and/or forward ports on your router.

The latest DSM release (DSM 4.0-2198) now fully supports UDP trackers.
This will solve any and all problems you had with UDP trackers (although it is not mentioned in the release notes).

Just a word of advice for people who use the DSM for downloading torrents...

  • Turn on DHT, set the port to the same as the BT port, apply the setting.
  • Then, go back into the settings and disable DHT.

Why disable DHT? Well, DHT is great for finding additional seeders when trackers are down. That's where it works well. Where it is not so good is when you want to maintain your anonymity.

DHT sends your IP and torrent hash out into the DHT ring, which quite simply allows you to be traced and logged far easier than with UDP trackers or encrypted peers.

http://www.youhavedownloaded.com uses DHT primarily to track downloaders, and software security firms use the same method to track you.

Also, DHT creates many UDP listening sessions on the DSM and could potentially bog down the CPU.

My advice is you should only enable DHT when you *really need it*.

I have the same issue and see no improvement on the latest DSM 4.0 for Torrent downloading. I did try all the steps suggested in this thread and no improvment. I can get much higher speed on a computer this is really disappointing, one of the major reason i bought this DS411+ is the torrent downloading fucntion so I don't need to leave a computer on all the time. :?

I no longer have any issues.. make sure you increase your total connections to 500 and see if that helps.. Also make sure you open your box to DMZ and let it handle all of the routing with the built in firewall.

Dear ,

Thanks for your inquiry.

The UDP tracker is not supported for DSM 3.2 and prior DSM versions. In short, the UDP tracker was being supported since DSM 4.0 beta and onward.

If you would like to experience the full potential of DSM 4.0 or the future coming release of the DSM operating system, please consider upgrading the current DiskStation to a newer models.

Your understanding will be well appreciated.

Sincerely,
Antoine Yang
